Pine Fruit (Ananas comosus), a tropical herbaceous perennial, is most significant plant in the Bromeliaceae family. Originating centuries ago, the pine fruit is indigenous to South America.
Some large-fruited cultivars can produce up to 200 flowers. In bloom, the individual fruits of the flowers join together to create what is referred to today as a pineapple.
Eventually finding its way from South America to Europe, then back to the Americas, it has served as both food and symbolic meaning - that of warmth, charm and style. It is for this reason that the pineapple has become the communal symbol of friendship and hospitality.
